The ITI, a promoter of cultural exchange world-wide, currently
is the largest international network for the performing arts. As
a non-governmental organisation created by UNESCO in 1948, it has
offices in more than 100 countries. Its General Secretariat is based
in Paris (UNESCO headquarters).
The German ITI develops and supports international cultural co-operation
by providing information services, by organising international encounters,
specialists’ conferences, theatre festivals (i.e. THEATER
DER WELT in Germany), and workshops centred around various aspects
of the performing arts. ITI Germany regularly publishes newsletters
(IMPULSE), papers, and books.

News: Ilona Copen, former president of the International
Dance Committee of the International Theater Institute, passed away
on Saturday, February 20th, 2010.
Ms. Copen was the founder of the New York International Ballet
Competition and a champion of the exchange of ideas among dance
companies around the world. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Ms. Copen
studied dance at the Juilliard School and performed with small modern-dance
companies directed by Myra Kinch, Shirley Broughton, Katherine Litz
and Jeff Duncan, among other choreographers. Yet her ambition to
be a modern dancer was soon eclipsed by a desire to promote dance
as a global art.
As president of the International Dance Committee of ITI from 1995
to 2008; she organized the closing ceremony of 30th ITI World Congress
in Tampico, Mexico, in 2004, and produced four celebrations of International
Dance Day in Paris. She also served on the boards of several dance
companies and schools.
