ITI-Newsletter 12 / 2023

Dear readers, friends and colleagues,
festivals, wars, snow - a controversial year is coming to an end. Here is the last news of the year from our side, including a brief review of ITI's 2023.
Extensive renovation work is currently being carried out at Kunstquartier Bethanien, so the Mediathek will be closed from December 4, 2023 to January 29, 2024. The ITI office will not be staffed from December 24, 2023 to January 2, 2024.
We wish you all a peaceful December and a good start to the coming year!

2023: ITI Academy, Theater der Welt & More

A very special highlight of this year was the ITI Academy. For the first time, the one-year fellowship offered 20 up-and-coming artists and curators the opportunity to deepen and reflect on their own practice as well as to exchange knowledge and network. The programme concluded with the ITI Academy Week in July as part of Theater der Welt, where the fellows were able to realize their own visions of internationality and diversity in the performing arts. For the 4th edition of the Journal, the fellows were also invited to make their concerns visible in texts.

2023 was also a Theater der Welt year. From June 29 to July 16, more than 300 artists from all over the world presented a total of 36 guest performances and new productions in Frankfurt and Offenbach, including 6 world premieres, 8 European premieres and 9 German premieres". Theater der Welt will then move to Chemnitz in 2026!

Brexit and its consequences were a focus of touring artists in 2023, with a two-day symposium on the subject taking place in Hamburg in September. In addition to numerous training and networking opportunities such as the Monthly Meet-Up and the Get Started workshop series, the free consultation service continued to be in great demand: more than 1,000 consultations have been held so far this year, more than ever before.

In October, the Theaterpreis des Bundes was awarded for the fifth time, where the ITI hosted the Symposium "Pleasures & Politics of Cooperation". In panels and moderated discussion rounds, theater professionals, experts and guests negotiated the potentials and problems of long-term and international cooperation. The live recording of the two panels is now available on the ITI website.

Studio2, ITI's rehearsal and practice space, has published two open calls as part of its residency program. With tanz:digital, a residency with a digital focus took place. With zwischen__räumen //między__miejscami in October, artists from Poland and Germany were able to work together in an open-ended way, promoting exchange on long-term formats in the performing arts.

The Media Library for Dance and Theater continued its collaboration with universities and archives as part of the project "Mediatheken der Darstellenden Kunst digital vernetzen". We were particularly pleased to be able to present the "Theater der Welt" digital archive with an extensive program to the public for the first time as part of Theater der Welt 2023.

The International Workshop Theater Übersetzen in Mülheim and the Forum Theater Übersetzung in Munich offered translators both to and from German the opportunity for further training and exchange within the framework of a theater festival.

The theateruebersetzen.de portal was further expanded and the LESERAUM series welcomed authors and theater practitioners to read their plays together every month. Finally, the Branchentreff Theater Übersetzen took place in November, this year in collaboration with Verband der Theaterautor:innen and the Deutsches Theater Berlin.

We look forward to 2024!
