From Translation to Circulation: Three European Perspectives

In collaboration with the Medusa Festival, we invite you to a discussion on the visibility of theatre translations.

How do contemporary plays find their way across linguistic and national borders? What role do institutional and informal networks play in this process? What do dramaturgs and theatres need to work with a translated text? And what happens with translated plays after their first staged reading as part of a festival?

In the run-up to the first MEDUSA festival in Berlin (5th–7th November, Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz) the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and the MEDUSA team will host a public talk. The event is aimed at people who work in dramaturgy, theatre or translation, but is also open to anyone who is interested. Together, we want to consider what structures, relationships and forms of collaboration are needed to ensure that theatre translations gain visibility and can circulate at all.

After a short presentation of the MEDUSA project, the curators of the project will give three short overviews of the situations in Germany, Bulgaria and Italy. They will describe the conditions for the circulation of translated plays in each of their countries and present existing networks of exchange between the three theatre scenes. Their three perspectives will then be brought together in a chaired discussion, during which guests will have the chance to share their experiences and ask questions.
