Juliane Zellner becomes the new Managing Director of ITI

The German center of the International Theater Institute (ITI) will have a new managing director in 2025. Dr. Juliane Zellner will take over from Dr. Thomas Engel, who will leave the ITI after 22 years as Managing Director, on January 1.

"I consider international exchange and knowledge transfer to be an absolute necessity due to a still largely marginalized Global South and not least in view of current European political developments. Who, if not the actors of art, culture and especially theater, should lead the way here?" says the designated managing director.

Juliane Zellner is a theater scholar and urbanist. After studying in Munich, Canterbury and London, she completed her doctorate at Hafencity University Hamburg on theater spaces in Buenos Aires and Istanbul. In addition to Turkish and Argentinian theater, she researches staging strategies in public space, comparative urbanism and cultural policy. Building on her academic work, she leads artistic and academic projects at the interface between the city and art. Since the end of 2022, she has been managing director of the umbrella organization Freie Darstellende Künste Hamburg.
